EDITORIAL NOTE
José Padilla belongs in the LHL because he demonstrated that music can author hospitality as decisively as architecture, cuisine or service. Café del Mar opened independently in San Antonio, Ibiza, in 1980; Padilla was not its founder. His authorship came through sound. Guest demand transformed his sunset sets first into tapes and then into the Café del Mar compilation series from 1994. The crucial LHL idea is portability: a specific place, hour, horizon and mood became recorded music that listeners could take home. His distinctive authorship was curation — matching music to place and time.
1 · IBIZA
Padilla moved to Ibiza in the mid-1970s, before its later global superclub economy had fully formed.
2 · CAFÉ DEL MAR
Café del Mar opened independently in San Antonio in 1980. Padilla did not create the physical venue; his authorship was musical and experiential.
3 · SUNSET IS THE CLOCK
The café faces the western horizon. Its central event happens at a predictable hour every evening but never looks exactly the same.
4 · MUSIC ENTERS THE LANDSCAPE
The DJ does not manufacture the spectacle. The task is to accompany and intensify what the landscape is already doing.
5 · RESIDENT DJ
Padilla became the DJ most closely associated with Café del Mar’s classic sunset sessions.
6 · NOT A CLUB SET
The room was preparing for night rather than reaching peak dance-floor intensity.
7 · ECLECTICISM
His selections crossed ambient, jazz, classical, Latin, soul, electronic and other categories.
8 · PROGRAMME THE FEELING
Genre consistency mattered less than emotional continuity.
9 · THE ARC
A sunset set has natural dramaturgy: late-afternoon light, anticipation, disappearance, twilight and the beginning of night.
10 · DJ AS HOSPITALITY AUTHOR
Music becomes hospitality authorship when it responds to guest state, place and time rather than functioning as generic background.
11 · THE OTHER IBIZA
Padilla communicated a quieter Ibiza of reflection, recovery and Mediterranean openness alongside the island’s louder club image.
12 · RITUAL
Repeated at the same horizon each evening, sunset became a hospitality ritual.
13 · TAPES
Guests asked for recordings and bought or requested tapes of Padilla’s selections.
14 · MEMORY OBJECT
The tape allowed a visitor to carry the evening away from Ibiza.
15 · PLACE BECOMES SOUND
Once the music leaves the island, the listener can reconstruct an imagined sunset without the physical café.
16 · 1994 — VOLUME ONE
The commercially distributed Café del Mar compilation series began in 1994, with early volumes compiled by Padilla.
17 · COMPILED WITH LOVE
Café del Mar’s archive describes his selections as hand-picked, chilled-out and eclectic, chosen to carry the spirit of the café.
18 · CURATION AS AUTHORSHIP
Padilla often did not compose the tracks. His authorship lay in selection, sequence, timing and association.
19 · PORTABLE HOSPITALITY
The compilations reconstructed atmosphere and made the Café del Mar idea globally portable.
20 · DESIRE TO TRAVEL
The recordings created desire to experience the place behind the music.
21 · CHILLOUT
Padilla became internationally associated with chillout music, though the label should not flatten his eclecticism.
22 · BALEARIC
His work belongs to the broader Balearic tradition of stylistic openness rather than genre purity.
23 · DJ AS ARCHIVIST
Padilla said he sought tracks that might otherwise be forgotten or that held the spirit of Café del Mar.
24 · CONTEXT CREATES VALUE
The same track at home and at Mediterranean sunset becomes a different experience.
25 · SOUVENIR
His 1998 album Souvenir extended the Ibiza atmosphere into original recorded work.
26 · NAVIGATOR
Navigator followed in 2001 and was associated with a Latin Grammy nomination.
27 · THE BRAND OUTGROWS THE DJ
Café del Mar later expanded independently as a music and venue brand.
28 · SEPARATE INSTITUTION + AUTHOR
The café is not Padilla, and Padilla is not the café; their defining period is a collaboration between place and curator.
29 · 2014 — RETURN
Padilla returned to Café del Mar in 2014 for a special sunset classics set.
30 · BEACH-CLUB PREHISTORY
Café del Mar predates the global explosion of luxury beach clubs, sunset lounges and resort DJ programming.
31 · SOUND AS BRAND CODE
Music can become as recognisable a brand code as scent, architecture or service ritual.
32 · DO NOT COPY THE PLAYLIST
A playlist copied from Ibiza does not create Ibiza. The lesson is contextual curation, not imitation.
33 · SUNSET ECONOMICS
A natural event can generate drinks, dwell time, repeat visitation, recordings, merchandise and global brand value.
34 · TIME AS ASSET
Hospitality normally monetises space; Café del Mar also demonstrates how a specific hour becomes an asset.
35 · 2020 — DEATH
José Padilla died in Ibiza in October 2020 at the age of 64 after serious illness.
36 · WHAT PADILLA CHANGED
Padilla helped establish music curation as destination authorship. Guest demand transformed sets into tapes; tapes became compilations; compilations made the physical café portable. His deepest contribution was contextual authorship.
37 · WHAT THIS MODEL DOES NOT SOLVE
Musical atmosphere is easy to imitate superficially. Commercial success can turn an intimate ritual into mass tourism. The model works only when curation remains responsive to place.
38 · PADILLA AND RÉGINE
Both treat music continuity as hospitality infrastructure. Régine keeps the dance floor alive; Padilla slows the room and guides it through sunset.
39 · PADILLA AND COLIN PETER FIELD
Field curates conversation, objects and cocktails; Padilla curates sound and time. Neither needs ownership to define an era of a hospitality institution.

42 · LHL STORY — PROGRAMME THE HOUR, NOT THE GENRE
The sun does not care whether the next track is ambient, jazz, classical or Latin.
The light is changing.
Choose what belongs to this minute.
Then choose what belongs to the next one.
The programme is the hour.

43 · A SECOND STORY — PUT THE SUNSET ON A CASSETTE
The guest watches the sun disappear.
Tomorrow he flies home.
He asks for the music.
Give him a tape.
Now the place travels without the terrace.
Hospitality becomes portable when memory has a medium.
44 · LEGACY
Padilla shows that a DJ can become a hospitality author without owning the venue. Café del Mar supplied the terrace and sunset; Padilla supplied musical intelligence equal to the setting. Guests took that feeling home on tapes and compilations, helping make a modest sunset bar a global cultural reference. His deepest legacy is simple: atmosphere can be authored through listening.
