1 · POSITION
United announced Polaris on 2 June 2016 as a business class organised around sleep. The airline said it had conducted more than 12,000 hours of research and that sleep emerged as the single most important priority for international business class travelers. The seat was designed with Acumen Design Associates and PriestmanGoode and manufactured by Zodiac Seats UK. One name was then applied to the seat, the bedding, the lounge and the meal together. [1]
2 · THE BED AND WHAT IS PUT ON IT
Each seat was given up to 6 foot 6 inches of bed space and a 16-inch high-definition entertainment screen. Saks Fifth Avenue designed the bedding collection, which United said would feature plush duvets and lightweight day-blankets, with mattress cushions on request. Customized United Polaris pajamas were to be available by request on flights longer than 12 hours. Hot mid-flight snacks such as lobster macaroni and cheese were offered on the longer sectors. [2]
3 · THE LOUNGE OPENS WITH THE CABIN
United Polaris begins service at 12:01 a.m. local time on December 1, the airline wrote in November 2016, in all of the airline’s markets. The first United Polaris lounge opened at Chicago O’Hare International Airport near Gate C18, with custom-designed chairs, private daybeds, spa-like showers and chef-inspired hot meals served in a boutique restaurant setting. Bespoke art installations by artist Wolfgang Buttress were commissioned. Eight further lounges were announced for 2017. [2]
4 · THE PRODUCT ACQUIRES A DOOR
In May 2025 a trade report described United Polaris Studio: positioned at the front of each Polaris cabin, these eight business-plus oversized suites were presented alongside new Polaris Suites 25 percent larger than the existing Polaris seats and enclosed behind privacy doors. Studio suites were reported with 27-inch 4K OLED screens and an Ossetra caviar service with Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé. The first refitted Boeing 787-9 was expected in service in late 2025. [3]
5 · ⚑ CANDOUR
⚑ The 2016 material describes the product as announced; the pyjamas, mattress cushion and bedding are promises in press releases, not performance observed here. Nine lounges were announced and only the Chicago opening is dated in these sources. Polaris Studio is reported by a trade publication rather than by United, and its dates were forward-looking when written. The register’s 1926 founding year is not established by these pages. [1–3]
