KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

KLM sends some of its passengers home with a small building. The Delft Blue miniature house, filled with Dutch gin, is presented in intercontinental Business Class and has been part of the airline's hospitality since the 1950s. It gives a flight something unusually durable: an object that can remain on a shelf after the journey's other provisions have been consumed. [1]

1 · POSITION

KLM sends some of its passengers home with a small building. The Delft Blue miniature house, filled with Dutch gin, is presented in intercontinental Business Class and has been part of the airline's hospitality since the 1950s. It gives a flight something unusually durable: an object that can remain on a shelf after the journey's other provisions have been consumed. [1]

2 · A BIRTHDAY IN MINIATURE

Founded on 7 October 1919, KLM links the collection to its own calendar. Since 1994, the number assigned to each new house has matched the airline's age, with another introduced on its anniversary. The gift therefore carries two histories at once: that of the building represented and that of the carrier handing it to the passenger. [2, 3]

3 · ONE HOUSE, THREE CANALS

For its 105th anniversary in 2024, KLM selected Amsterdam's Het huis aan de drie grachten. The miniature refers to a real building bordering three canals, rather than a generic image of a Dutch house. Its specificity gives the souvenir a subject to discover: the traveller can connect an object received aboard with an actual place in the city. [2]

4 · A RETURN JOURNEY REMEMBERED

The houses also form a collection. For a returning guest, receiving another can extend a sequence established on earlier flights. This is a quiet form of recognition through a repeated gesture, even when different crews perform it. The object makes the airline's identity portable and gives repeated travel a physical record beyond a balance of loyalty points. [1, 2]

5 · ⚑ CANDOUR

⚑ The house is associated with the specified intercontinental Business Class offer, not every KLM ticket. Its long history does not establish uninterrupted consistency in other aspects of service. Nor should the date of the airline's founding be confused with the start of this gift tradition: the miniature houses belong to a later chapter. [1–3]
